Aesthetic Pollution

Visual pollution or aesthetic pollution is currently a phenomenon that can no longer be ignored, given its effects on the image of urban space as well as over the population. Aesthetic pollution basically refers to the inability of an individual to enjoy a pleasant view (Lascu, 2015). It is caused by a chain of harmful changes in the surrounding environment which ultimately results in an individual’s disrelish towards the environment. The issue is not only prevalent in urban but also in rural areas.

Aesthetic pollution is a relatively new concept and thus remains unaddressed in a lot of regions. Even the people are oblivious to what aesthetic pollution truly means and its effects. Littering, landfills, plastic waste, smog, and vandalism are only a few examples of the causes of visual pollution. Some natural causes also contribute to this type of pollution, but for the most part, the major pollutants are human-made.

In our regular life, we may not notice the effects of aesthetic pollution, but it is a growing threat to society. It leads to lower quality of life and eye fatigue. In addition, physician health issues and mental issues are some of the consequences too. It causes distraction, accidents and affects the flora and fauna of the environment. In India, aesthetic pollution is escalating rapidly, with littering, spitting on roads, and vandalism being the major causes.

Some solutions to this growing issue include educating the youth about the ill effects of visual pollution, reducing waste levels, implementing stricter laws and fines against vandalism, spitting on roads, and other causes of aesthetic pollution. The time to act is now. If it's too late then aesthetic pollution will result in man-made disasters.
