Road Rage: Not just physical but mental health hazard too

Updated: Jul 14, 2021

The easiest way I can explain road rage to you is that road rage is one driver deliberately wanting to hurt or cause pain physical and or mental to another driver a pedestrian. In all our lives almost all of us have been victims or offenders of road rage. If not affected directly we might have seen other people being victims or offenders of road rage. You might have witnessed a quarrel on the side of the road, people screaming at each other in some situations even physically hurting each other. You see such a thing and it might upset you or even make you sad. If even being a bystander can cause this kind of distress we can imagine what a victim of road rage might feel.

Road rage is a big reason for causing traffic-related accidents. It often leads to violent and angry confrontations between two drivers sometimes even the victim or offender can be a pedestrian. Usually, some factors that enrage one driver and their expression of that certain frustration or those emotions which further provokes another driver and they act accordingly. A lot of times these confrontations happen because people tend to take things personally.

Researches have suggested that anger while driving or aggressive driving can be associated with psychiatric problems this is not to say that all victims and offenders report these issues but about 30% do which is a significantly higher number. (Reginald G Smart, n.d.) What is to be noted is that victims of road rage will get a higher score on a GHQ (General Health Questionnaire) which signifies report a higher level of psychiatric problems than the offender.

In conclusion, I would like to encourage readers to be more mindful in these situations. We should be able to assess questions like “is this confrontation worth the time and peace of mind?” and try and not to take things personally on the road.
